The Last Five Years by Jason Robert Brown is an unconventionally told musical about a couple, who fall in and out of love over the course of five years. The characters each tell their stories, placing past and present side by side.
The show’s unique concept means that we see the rise and fall of their story from two different points of view and from two different directions – she starts at the end of the relationship and works backwards, he starts at the beginning and works forwards. The only time the two characters interact is in the middle of their stories, their marriage.
Simultaneously funny and poignant, the show captures some of the most heartbreaking, hilarious and universally felt moments of modern romance. It asks what happens when one person in a relationship achieves great success while the other does not, and shows us how there are two sides to every story – and every relationship.
